Screen Australia

Screen Australia is a newly established Australian Government agency operating under the Screen Australia Act 2008 (Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts).

Screen Australia commenced operation on 1 July 2008, bringing together the functions of the Film Finance Corporation Australia (FFC) and Film Australia Limited, as well as most of the functions of the Australian Film Commission (AFC).

The National Film and Sound Archive, previously part of the AFC, has been established as a separate statutory authority. See www.nfsa.gov.au

The creation of Screen Australia heralds a new era in Australian film and television, expanding the potential of the industry and the opportunities for the more than 50,000 people it currently employs.

Screen Australia aims to be a strong centralised funding body, encouraging greater private investment in Australian film and television and building on the enormous contribution the industry already makes to the Australian economy.

Our goal is to develop, produce, promote, distribute and provide access to diverse Australian programs, and support the development of the Australian screen production industry, so that Australian screen content is accessible nationally and internationally.

Special Broadcasting Service

Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) and SBS Independent (SBSi) SBS is a national, public broadcaster with a special mandate to reflect the multicultural nature of Australian society. The principal function of SBS is to provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia’s multicultural society. SBSi at: http://www.sbs.com.au/sbsi/index.html is responsible for commissioning a wide range of quality Australian drama and documentaries for screening in prime time on SBS Television. SBSi is responsible for the Special Production Fund of approx $7 million annually, allocated by the Federal Government, for the commissioning of quality Australian projects from independent filmmakers.

Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) The Office of Film and Literature Classification is responsible for the classification of publications, films and computer games according to the Classification Act 1995 which came into force on January 1 1996. The Act is part of a new cooperative classification agreement between Australia’s states and territories. The Classification Board is a Commonwealth Agency which is part of the Attorney-General’s Department portfolio.

National Film and Sound Archive

National Film and Sound Archive National Film and Sound Archive Research Centre and Library The National Film and Sound Archive plays a leading role in preserving and collecting Australia’s film, television and sound heritage. The Archive collection includes books, journals, CD-ROMs, films, videos and sound recordings, as well as photographic stills, posters, lobby cards, publicity material and press clippings. The National Collection of Screen and Sound catalogue is available online and includes more than 400,000 items. Reference staff are in the Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney Offices. Research Services: the first 30 minutes of specialised research is free after which a fee of $54 (including GST) per hour is charged.
